Nomex, Mylar, PET and Gar-Flex insulation compared

Nomex is an aramid paper rated Class H (180 °C). Mylar and PET are polyester films rated Class B (130 °C). Gar-Flex APA is an aramid-polyester-aramid laminate rated Class F (155 °C). All are supplied as sheet or roll, or die-cut, punched and folded to drawing, for slot liners, phase barriers, spacers and wraps.

What each material is

Nomex (aramid) paper

A paper made from aramid (aromatic polyamide) fibre. It carries a Class H rating, 180 °C, and is supplied as sheet, slot liners, barriers and formed parts.

Mylar and PET film

Mylar is a brand of polyester (PET) film; PET film is the same polymer supplied as roll, sheet or die-cut part. Both carry a Class B rating, 130 °C, and are die-cut, punched and folded into spacers, liners and barriers.

Gar-Flex APA laminate

A three-layer laminate: aramid paper, polyester film, aramid paper. It carries a Class F rating, 155 °C, and is die-cut into slot liners and phase barriers.

Where the class ratings come from

The insulation class is the thermal class defined in IEC 60085: the maximum continuous temperature the insulation system is rated for. See electrical insulation classes explained for the full table.

Frequently asked
